Ping, Latency, and Jitter Explained

Download and upload speed get all the attention, but for gaming, video calls, and how "snappy" the internet feels, three other numbers matter just as much: ping, latency, and jitter. The good news is they are simple once you see what they actually measure.
Latency: the time for data to make a round trip
Latency is the delay between sending a request and getting a response, measured in milliseconds (ms). Think of shouting across a canyon and waiting for the echo โ latency is how long the echo takes. Lower is better. While speed is about how much data you can move, latency is about how quickly a single piece of it responds.
Ping: how we measure latency
"Ping" is really the tool and the test we use to measure latency, but in everyday use the two words mean the same thing. When a speed test shows a ping of 20 ms, it means a small packet went to the server and back in 20 thousandths of a second. Gamers obsess over ping because it directly decides how fast the game responds to what you do.
What counts as good ping?
- Under 20 ms: excellent โ effectively instant.
- 20โ50 ms: very good; great for gaming and calls.
- 50โ100 ms: fine for most things; competitive gamers may notice.
- 100โ150 ms: usable, but lag becomes noticeable in games.
- Over 150 ms: high; calls and games feel delayed.
Some latency is simply physics: data can't travel faster than light, so a server on another continent will always have higher ping than one nearby. That's why games place you on regional servers.
Jitter: how much latency varies
Jitter is the variation in your ping over time. If your latency bounces between 20 ms and 90 ms from one moment to the next, you have high jitter โ even if the average looks fine. Consistency is what matters here: a steady 60 ms is often better than an average of 40 ms that keeps spiking.
High jitter is the usual culprit behind calls that stutter, game characters that "warp", and video that freezes then races to catch up. Low jitter โ ideally under 10 ms โ means a smooth, predictable connection.
Why these beat raw speed for some tasks
Once you have a stable 15โ20 Mbps, adding more speed does nothing for gaming or calls. What you feel instead is latency and jitter. A 1000 Mbps connection with high ping and jitter will game worse than a modest 50 Mbps line with low, steady latency. This surprises a lot of people who chase the biggest speed number.
How to improve ping and jitter
- Use a wired connection โ Ethernet cuts both ping and jitter.
- Get closer to the router or improve Wi-Fi coverage.
- Stop background downloads and uploads that congest the line.
- Choose nearby game servers to reduce unavoidable distance delay.
- Restart an old, overheating router that may be adding delay.
Check your own numbers
Run a speed test and look beyond download and upload. Note your ping and jitter, then try again on a wired connection or closer to the router and compare. If your ping is low and jitter is small, your connection is well-suited to gaming and calls โ regardless of how big your speed number is.
